Mouth

Somebody once told me to shut my mouth – I was just thinking. Was it to stop things getting in, or things coming out? That was when I was a child and people told you what to do. I still think with my mouth open. But they no longer tell me not to. They simply ask why. As if now I’m grown up I might h...

best poem yet????

that's really irritating. i don't want to be told what you think is the best poem on the forum. i don't suppose the author would be particularly comfortable with such a tag either. it's patronising, highly subjective and reminds me of being at school. can't we just read each other's work without hav...

lonely hearts club

lonely hearts club I saw you at the bus station you were wearing a pale blue shirt, cruel blue eyes, whistling blue notes blowing smoke through a casual golden fringe; I remember thinking “he’s the one” I wanted to follow you but then I remembered it probably wasn’t on and anyhow life is far too rea...

I certainly had a lot of fun with beowulf at university - all those thanes and swords with names like "hrunting" - ahh, those were the days.....and also those amazing solitary reflection poems "the wanderer" and "the seafarer" - i'll try and dig them out.

Ode to a Future Lover

[I thought seeing as everyone seems to be dabbling in classical form at the moment i'd let you have this one.......] ode to a future lover one hundred percent of the men with whom I’ve slept have fallen in love with me and have worn polo-necks; I would not presume to claim these things are linked, y...

Bluebells

Empty like a balloon You fill up my eyes with red tears and press the lids against the glass But it is not really you that does this I am grating my skin To feel this pain more acutely I must add salt, southern comfort, ice When was the last time you drank water? Bloated fish out of water Who hears ...

Things that are Round

When he leaves me The sky is in mourning. The day perpetuates itself Into a long grey line of Other days Holes and shapes, Things that are round. Icicles form, That will not melt until his return, An impending peace Weighs upon my soul Causing calm creations. I am as close to happiness as I am ever ...
