Re: Teenage Luv
I like the translation of the 3 americanisms into their english equivalents Aah, I see. That completely passed me by. That makes two of us... Still, even with the addition of that layer, I'm struggling to find meaning. I assume the father is American and the mother British? Or, in an ironic twist, ...

Re: Teenage Luv
Is this a statement about the limitations of the teenage mind? Teens often reach for cliches when expressing themselves, and find them in pop culture? And they hate their parents?
I dunno. I don't really "get" it. Sorry.

Re: Sky Boats
I like those boats. Brings me right back to childhood. I used to fantasize quite a bit about floating away on things that shouldn't float. Although a sofa was a personal favorite, or an upside down house, these boats would have done nicely if they were in front of me. My first feeling about the poem...

Yes, fun.
I took the last line to be an extension of the sentiment of lines 8-10. The teacher is intimating a bet.

Re: Since my last epiphany...
This feels like it was written to be performed. It's both off-putting and endearing.

towards the back of a shed.
Love that bit.
The shed/instead rhyme I found obtrusive.
On the whole I had fun reading it, but it doesn't do a lot for me.

Note: I had started typing this up (in a word processor, of course) before the forum went down and all recent posts were lost: Not a proper crit, but I have to chime in and say that I had a reaction similar to kj's. I didn't find this sensual or (artistically) exciting. I was like, oh, he's having ...

Going as a mod this Halloween, huh?
The Picard pic is probably one meme too far, sure. But the six fish getting fried is a fitting response considering the thread we're in.

Re: Facebook Swill
Oh, well, can't really fight God. Ain't that the truth. Are you sure that yor friend actually posted it, Travis? Quite sure. It sounds like some kind of spam/virus/account hijack/ to me. Nah. It's just a certain kind of person (or people, in my case) sharing a certain kind of garbage.

Though irksome in their own ways, I'm not talking about the endless pictures of ordinary meals accompanied by the word "Yummy!". I'm not talking about the sonograms or the baby bumps, or the effusive happy birthdays (!!) from the proud parents of the baby Jaxs of this world. I'm not talkin...

Re: Parfitt
I really want the poem to end on "wishing that I was and wasn't Parfitt" but I don't know whether to cut the lines after that entirely or work them in further up. I vote for the latter. My favorite part is: Puberty was... a musky scent hung in the street where Jane lived, hoping for a gli...

Re: Who's reading what?
[center] I think I recommended Embassytown , somewhere a bit further back on this thread. I'd definitely still recommend it. Sci-fi about language! + Embassytown exists on the very edge of the "Manchmal" (from the German for "sometimes"), which is suspected to be the third iterat...

Re: Who's reading what?
Finished A Storm of Swords. It picked up. A couple of hundred pages into A Fire Upon the Deep. It's quite the universe. Runs the gamut from medieval situations on a backwater planet to extragalactic, transcendent AI. It's one of the most expansive SF novels I've read, and it forces you to look at bi...

Re: Antiphon issue Eight now live!
I asked myself two questions: 1. If an unfortunate reading of said sentence were to occur, what sort would be least likely to give me the benefit of the doubt? 2. Out of that group, which individual would be most likely to smell like boiled wieners? As is often the case though, I may have gotten the...

Re: Antiphon issue Eight now live!
David, I read Helena ..must have been near a week ago, and though it was late and I had been drinking (was, in fact, still drinking), I still felt the same way about it when I read it again the next morning: blown away. I think it's because I knew you when you weren't as good. And now you're just as...
