A poem that I read today by Mac

How many poets does it take to change a light bulb?

She's great, and that's a great poem. The Guardian commentary I think is OK, at its best when it just quotes other poems of hers. I'm not convinced they've summed this poem up and put a ribbon around it.

Cheers,
John

Fine poem. I liked this line: "the loud celebrities / Exhorting us to slaughter." I hear that.

Lovely. I don't know RS Thomas very well. I especially like this line: "letting our prayers break on him."

He can be relentlessly dour, so I limit myself to a dip, though I did attend a reading by him and he mesmerized. I like the 'lean hours'.

Yes, that is nice, isn't it!
The site gives just his birthdate: 1913, so I'd imagine there's a death date somewhere.

That seems natural. A birth date of 1913 with no death date might suggest that one is dealing with a vampire!

Nice that you got to see him read.

Nice poem, Phil! I like this one as well:

Which for some reason always reminds me of this:

Thanks John, enjoyed those, particularly the lice glue🤣

I holidayed at Criccieth a couple of times. Good base for trips to Snowdonia, Llyn and Anglesey. It also has a splendid fish n' chips👍

Two great poets!

In a perfect world, the splendid fish and chips might have made it into the poem!

I dipped into a BBC radio programme and this is what I heard.

Ouf. That's bleak, and not without reason. Thanks for posting, Phil, I know Johnson's name but not his work. Here are The Pogues in parallel:

It is indeed. One can run into, among other things, the wrong sort of coppers with too much time on their hands.

A very useful closing line if you have children...

Autumn Sky is one of my favourite reading sites. It has a facility that allows a site search for formal or free verse or vintage poems.

Yup, that is a famous closing line. Good to be reminded how good Marianne Moore is. She is neglected these days IMO.
