I would like to read some poetry by the Spanish poet Lorca. He was killed in 1936 at the beginning of the Spanish Civil War. I am going to look for details of where he is buried.

Have you heard the song by The Pogues entitled 'Lorca's Novena'?
Its a fantastic song and a fantastic piece of poetry.
The imagery is amazing. Written by one of the best lyricists of all time, Shane MacGowan.

Hi Awen,

Welcome to the land of Dead Good Poets.

I've got 3 Pogues albums but none of them have this track. Which one is it on?

The most amazing thing about Shane is the fact that he's still alive. (And his teeth.) No, he (and the boys) created a brilliant fusion of punk rock and trad Irish music.

Be interested to see these lyrics.

Hi there,
Its from the album Hell's Ditch. Its slightly different to what you might expect from the pogues, with some spanish and various other influences.
heres the lyrics:

Lorca's Novena

Ignacio lay dying in the sand
A single red rose clutched in a dying hand
The women wept to see their hero die
And the big black birds gathered in the sky

Mother of all our joys, mother of all our sorrows
Intercede with him tonight
For all of our tomorrows

The years went by and then the killers came
And took the men and marched them up the hill of pain
And lorca the faggot poet they left till last
Blew his brains out with a pistol up his arse

Mother of all our joys, mother of all our sorrows
Intercede with him tonight
For all of our tomorrows

The killers came to mutilate the dead
But ran away in terror to search the town instead
But lorca’s corpse, as he had prophesied, just walked away
And the only sound was the women in the chapel praying

Mother of all our joys, mother of all our sorrows
Intercede with him tonight
For all of our tomorrows

Speaking of Lorca, I dont suppose anyone has read 'Adam'? It appeared in the translation section of an old Poetry Review journal from the 1970s I happened to be reading recently.

Hi awen. Don’t know the song about Lorca by The Pogues, but will see if I can borrow a CD. Also have not read ‘Adam’ but I know someone who might know where I can read it.
I have been reading ‘A life of Lorca’ with drawings, photographs, words etc. Poems in English and Spanish. It’s really useful to have the English translation, as Lorca’s poems are difficult to understand in Spanish. It helps to know what he had in mind at the time of writing. It was a great tragedy that he was killed so young and so uselessly. Dee
