I was never caught in catch and go kiss.
My playground days were full
of Sarah with long blond hair,
clackers and elastics.
Gwen who flaunted auburn
plaits, British Bulldog, jacks
and Christine who gave
it up too easily. Yet I still played,
forever the optimist.

One Saturday they came to visit.
Cast critical thirteen year old eyes,
told me to hitch up my dress,
use a belt..Christ I still cringe
at the thought of that brownie
belt with its tarnished brass buckle.
I so wanted to be accepted.

I was taught how to toss over metal bars
at the running circuit, knickers on show.
That's where the lads hung out
and sometimes that's where you scored.
So there I dangled, seemed I dangled
for days, not scoring in my short shift dress,
navy knickers and pumps.
I was grateful they didn't take the piss.
They told it, lived it like it was.
All hormones and feathered hair.

Bravo!
Mesmie, this is marvelous!
How sweet and terrible.
While my American experience would exchange some of the games, the feelings were the same.

Really. What a great memory in it's fully exposed way.
You still playing these games, dear? I am sure I could spin around a bar, heh. No one would be watching though... heh.

Great inspirational write. You've got me remembering building forts in the backyard, paper boys and first kisses......
VERY enjoyable.

Good way to start a weekend,
Suzanne

mesmie,

This is a real treat, It´s well put together and delivers a multitude of really good images and thoughts. Personally I think this the best poem I have read of yours so far.
Well done, I don´t see anything to crit, well done, great material and a great poem.

Many thanks for an entertaining read

to anticipate touching what is unseen seems far more interesting than seeing what the hand can not touch

Mesmie,
His name was John, and he had the dreamest eye lashes, no wait.. that was Jim. John was the paperboy, I was 11, he would hang around the backdoor so my mom wouldn't see.... it was the first kiss. ooo, the rush.

lol. Thanks again, Mesmie.

Such fun.

Just loved it, didn't even think of looking for things to crit just went with the flow. Great to know it's not just the lads that have problems getting noticed
So there I dangled, seemed I dangled
for days, not scoring in my short shift dress,
navy knickers and pumps.
Great lines.

We called it Kiss Chase when I was young. Lots of bruises, I recall, few kisses! What are clackers? And jacks? I remember British Bulldog. Dangled for days is a great phrase and sums up the angst of that age very well.
I'm out of faith and in my cups
I contemplate such bitter stuff.

Although there is angst here there is also a feel good factor as it reminds us of childhood days. I could feel the bruises from those clackers. I really enjoyed reading this.

Kind words indeed Dante mucho thankyous.. :D

Suz john?...Jim?...aww now come on lass make up your mind!! :D

Ray clackers resembled bolas on short strings..with a handle half way attached to the string... the object was to get them to hit each other above hand..below hand
they were banned in the end as there were many broken wrists professional clackerees (lol) padded their wrists..

Jacks another game using a small hard red ball about the size of a marble and little metal shapes the object was to throw the ball upwards about six inches(this game was played sitting down) before it landed, pick up one shape then next go two then next three by the time you were onto picking up ten your knuckles were bloody from the ashphelt ...

Thanks Karalma yeh those years were full of fun and angst too!!

Ben tis true Oh the times I believed myself to be in love and it was always unrequited LOL...sniff...sob...heh :) thanks for the great comment..
