Oh, this metropolis glows
In the morning sun. What a cliché.
But nothing to spoil
The morning. Yet.
And there, the beat of
Adolescence carries on,
But is suddenly interrupted
By
A drum.

Storm clouds gather, a tsunami of
Ash decides to fall.
"It is raining in New York."
But to be honest,
I'm not sure
Where we are anymore.

I see a woman
Take her child's hand.
I see rushing people,
Why do you run from such a place?
Across the water, reflecting,
There is a twinkle of life;
That life, not this.
Before these days, we lived
That life, That way.
But the world is not like that today.

In a coffee shop, I order one
Cup of black. Never before,
Have I done that.
I watch the skyline and
The woman from before,
I see her buried beneath
The carpet of ash
Outside the door.

Hullo BlueMoon

I've been struggling with this.....

"It's raining in New York," Silver said. "It's been raining now for two years and whatever you have put aside, now is the time to use it. These are the days that they were put aside for."

The above is the Google quote on your quote and in context I don't understand.

The below is is the other Google quote on your quote, a song by Oh Laura:
"It's raining in New York
And I know what it feels like
Cause I've walked 3rd Avenue
With tears in my eyes"

and in that context, I still don't understand.

Help me out here.

Ah hello John, sorry about the confusion.
In my head, that line was being read by a newsreader or rather... a weather girl.

I do feel guilty about putting 'rain' in it... it just seems like the easy way out doesn't it? I was going for a metaphor, the rain actually represents downfall... of what I'm not sure myself. Then the following two lines 'I'm not sure where we are anymore' seem to say something about society, and how we no longer recognize ourselves, because whoever we elect (in Britain, now) does not seem to actually speak for the voice we would like it to, was in an Auden mood when I wrote this.

The entire context is really a tourist in NY at the time of the 9/11 attacks. Regardless what anyone thinks of them, such an event gives you a new outlook on something. At least I think.

Thanks for taking the time to comment,
BM.

Hi BM

My fault, I should have made the connection of raining (ash) in NY and 911

If this is about 9/11 - and apparently it is - I'm not sure why there's a reference to the "beat of adolescence" - or is that just an evocation of NY as a youthful, happening place?

The choice of "tsunami" is a bit unfortunate at this time, I think, for all kinds of reasons. Well, two that I can think of, anyway.

Do you really need S3? If so, what is its purpose?

Hope that's a bit helpful, at least.

Cheers

David
