Different Ways of Living in Paris
When other drivers yielded, he would wave
from the front seat, which made Georgina smile.
Stephanie put on some Jackson Browne
and leant against his young knees. These were all
different ways of living in Paris.
Walking from the block of Saint-Sulpice
past flower stands and past liturgical
suppliers of what’s Catholic, he came
to their pet pizzeria. This Left Bank
building, was it eighteenth-century?
The tan stone shone, and caddies helped the old
transport their shopping home. He disappeared
into Les Halles, emerged again in clothes
young men might wear. Met Anne in a café
that faced Saint Jacques – the river. And behind
the Cité, where you’ll find the ice cream’s good,
he nursed a broken heart. Above his head,
clouds flecked the open vault of Heaven. Not
a lot of tourists looked from what occurred
to this young U.S. citizen. The Seine
eddied; birds landed on it; on the berges,
some folks held hands. At 6 a.m., a coach
delivered him to Bercy, where they’ve gone
and built a library. Seven floors above
the dogshit on the pavement was the flat
they cooked in, where he did research. The press
of city living. How could he be sure
of what escaped so easily? The gravel
paths near the Senate bore his weight. His hand
held his companion’s. Statuary loomed.

Should that be "looked at"?
This feels like it might stand up as an introduction to something, a novel maybe. On its own it seems pretty inconsequential.

I'm out of faith and in my cups
I contemplate such bitter stuff.

Hi Ray,
looked from point A to point B, is my intent there.
This is of course suffused with private meaning - I'm reminiscing - but that doesn't mean I've begun the task of selling my private meaning to the reader. For you at least, I haven't really, and the piece has not drawn a lot of comment. It's a priceless family heirloom! But without market value. That may be the case. I'll have to think of cutting it from the MS., where i am hoping to sustain interest.
I could picture it within a larger narrative, but I conceived it as a stand-alone unit. Interesting idea.
Thanks!
Cheers,
John
