Certainly in your face, so to speak (apologies for the pun), and not expected.

The colours are great, and as I step back I see the perspective; the shadows behave themselves, the initial harshness retreats and it becomes a personality.

Well done.

:)

Thanks John.

I possibly should have posted a smaller image to get it closer to 'real' size for people with large monitors. The painting is only six by eight inches, but even on my very modest monitor, it looks much bigger.

I like the colour placements and the way the picture exudes an underlying sense of character.

This one's just got me my first DD!!!!!!!!!

This won't mean anything to anyone who isn't on deviantART, but a DD (Daily Deviation) means my picture has been selected to be showcased today. As dART is an enormous site, that's a HUGE boost in visibility for me.

Update on this one: if you'd like to see the original and are anywhere near London, pop along to the "Show your face" exhibition at the 'Cultivate' gallery. The Exhibition runs 27th Jan to 1st Feb. More details here: http://www.facebook.com/events/196336327122498/

Amazing use of brush strokes! I would like to ask what layers were built up in what order but that might ruin the amazingness of it.

Well done!

Thanks Dando! I honestly can't remember the order of layers and stuff, so would be hard pressed to answer your question anyway.

I'm no artist but you have certainly captured character/personality with a good balance of colour and detail especially with the features. Impressive well done and congratulations on Deviantart feature!

Well done Cathy. Would it be possible to reduce this to avatar size? Would be nice to see this face with your posts.

Thanks Brian. I've had a look at this at avatar size, and there simply aren't enough pixels for it to work. I like to have an avatar that I can look at without wincing.

I tried. Looked downright creepy. Think I'll stick with the chaffinch.
