Lose the middle section and you've got a great poem....indeed a poem of two halves rather like the World Cup final. An attritional first stanza, some cynical challenges, then the change of mood, the sublime passing movements between the tender imagery, the slow build up and that devastating finish.
The more I think about it, given the way you describe her personality, the more I can see why she chose to leave at half time!
