Coal

We waited till the snow had hemmed the house
as high as me, aged five,
ready in wellies and red knit mittens.
Along sacred ground
we rolled his boulder of a body,
me puffing and pushing with all of my might,
you letting me think I was pushing.
For feet we saved him splayed out twigs,
a carrot of course for a nose.

I placed him in my ice palace and wept
his loss. Listen, Dad; you can hear the thaw,
two eyes and a smile, there on the lawn.

Do you ever write anything bad???

Wish it would snow.

One question, and I hope you dont mind me asking it, do you remember this situation?

Well kind of - it's more based on a photo I have, of me and my dad clearing snow from our driveway. I would have been about 5 and I'm wearing a red cardigan my mum knitted for me. So I embellished slightly.

It started off trying to be a sonnet but I quickly gave up on that. Don't have the patience, I'm afraid.

Another good'un.

'ready in wellies and red kit mittens' - great line. Reminds me of my daughters doing the same thing; red mittens and blue wellies.

The title and the last line hold the essence.

One to save.

cheers

Brings back memories of a back garden covered with virgin snow -
not even a bird's imprint.......

Great last line.

Cheers
Geoff

PS Two snowmen in a field.
One says to the other "Can you smell carrots?"
