Sound like men
but they are dogs
dogs with names
like Fred and Ken.
Hilarious with their
pipes and slippered
allusions, they don't
play pool or look good
in a hat, they eat their
own shit, and that is that.
Whatever happened to "Rover"
I guess he got run over by
the irony truck, delivering
kitsch to a barren old witch
this side of Deptford.
The joke it seems is on them.
For you - Sid and Ben.

I was going to say that I was missing something here - but it would be truer to say that I'm missing everything
Who is the old witch - Dulwich's very own Mrs T?

I just took this at face value - how dogs' names are no longer 'doggy'. Rex, Rover, Shep, Blackie, Laddie, Lady, Lassie etc (Rin Tin Tin?) - they all seem to have human names these days. My daughter has a dog called Johnson! I suppose it's better than naming kids after pieces of fruit like Peaches Geldoff.
Quirky, funny stuff with some good rhymes.

in a hat, they eat their
own shit, and that is that. - I suppose this could include politicians as well.

After letting go of branches and walking through the ape gait, we managed to grasp what hands were really for......
I am assuming you speak of "dogs playing poker", and yes, I too hate them. It does not get any cheesier than personified animals, whether it be in movies, poems or bad pop culture art. However, I must agree with twoleftfeet that I have no clue who the old witch is, or could she just be any crazy old lady stuffing here candy coated house with kitschy crap trying to entice little ones to keep her company. Regardless, the poem is fun, kinda cheesey like the topic it mocks and has a couple of great lines.
"hilarious with their/pipes and slipppered/allusions". I love the image of how the dogs pipe dreams should be slipping away. I mean for christs sake, "they eat their own shit".
My only question is, Who is sid and ben? is it just for the purpose of ryme or, perhaps, some friends with poor taste in wall art?

There is definitely a sense of ambiguity here, even a touch of venom for me, that makes it have to be about more than dogs.
Some nice lines and phrases and the structure and rhymes make it flows nicely. But I, like others, was left a little lost. I feel I'm missing a few of the messages/images.

is the fact that Deptford is near the Isle of Dogs at all relevant?

Thanks guys.
Just trying to keep my hand in, I've had absolutely NO inclination to write at all of late. As Barrie noted, a face value poem -about how dogs' names are no longer 'doggy' What was the point? just to write really.
Isn't it goddam odd how as a writer you can go for months/years churning stuff out, then suddenly a mental block. A nothingness?
Why is that?
cheers

Nice flow and pace Krissy boy. Sounds very tight (as usual).
For me, usually a lack of such-ness. Go out somewhere, get drunk, speak to some nice ladies. Usually works for me.
