Sweet Carina Lytton
was a right sex kitten -

I was really smitten
so I knitted her a mitten.

Mistook it for a merkin
from the magazine's pattern.

(I fancied I'd impress her
with a technicolour thatch.)

She said "I'm not a slattern"
and she battened down the hatch.

Very good, Stu. Great use of sounds. What's a merkin, I thought. Now I know. Hmm. (I thought it was one of George Bush's fellow-countrymen.)

Cheers

Nice one.
My friend knows someone who actually had to use a merkin. In a theatrical production, darlings.
I felt sure 'firkin' was going to turn up, but am glad that it didn't!

Yes, I'd agree, lots of fun. I struggled somewhat with 'so I knitted her a mitten', though I can't really put my finger on why. Nobody else has complained, so I'd be inclined to ignore me...

Cheers,

Reminds me of some of the poetry by Kevin Turvey (Rik Mayall) back in the Eighties.

Sweet Carina Lytton
was a right sex kitten

Turvey's poem called 'Vanessa' -

When I caress her her,
Vanessa
.

Every line a jem.

The weak triple -itten rhyme and shaky control of rhythm let down a potentially amusing example of doggerel, although the ending shows potential.

Lovely start ...
Mistook it for a merkin
merkin?
A merkin (first use, according to the OED, 1617) is a pubic wig, originally worn by prostitutes after shaving their genitalia to eliminate lice or disguise the marks of syphilis. There are many different ways of wearing a merkin, although most involve placing the merkin on the vulva or the scrotum.
Right, OK.

She said "I'm not a slattern"
and she battened down her thatch?

Right. I'm on my way home.

I'm dead chuffed that this is enjoying something of a renaissance, considering I bashed it off in five minutes just to keep my hand in a couple of months back.

No depth, no brilliance aimed at, just a trifle, nothing more, maybe less.

Lots of really good poems coming up at the moment on Experienced. Leave this one to the vultures!

Cheers
