All Consuming

ALL CONSUMING

A quiet corner long forgot
consumption claimed another cot
lichen-inked and listless stones
chiselled grit and granite groans.

This child of 1853
is prised apart by every tree
tombstone felled by forest brutes
a muddied crowd of smearing mutes.

Trapped and torn in sapling prison
life defies her every schism
life that saw out not one year
life so brief and then not here.

Why give that life to take away?
Why give that life not New Years Day?
Why give it ghost of sickly hue?
Why give it haunted glades of yew?

Why twine such cold and splintered fingers?
twisting gripped and glistening lingered
Why take secrets to the grave?
Why bury death amongst the slaves?

I have not finished this yet Sean, but I thought I'd ask you why you sacrificed grammar right out of the gate -

A quiet corner long forgot (forgotten)?
