A little melodramatic on occasion, but also some magic
The Garden of Fand
Hi mac,
Yes, magic and melodrama sums this up well
I preferred listening to the A sections (beginning and end), finding the B bit (middle) rather stressful on the ears. I read that Bax's orchestration is usually pretty lavish (Wikipedia) and I wonder whether he overworked the dynamics and other aspects to create contrasts between A and B. That said, a lot depends on the performance; I've known conductors to come over quite excitable on occasion, morphing a piece into something quite different from what the composer indicates in the score (yikes!)
Best wishes,
Leaf
