OK, watch out for issue 26 of The Journal (out now!) - I've got two of mine in it - Storm and Consider the bee. In case anyone remembers them.

Well, looking on the web it's either rural news from Newcastle or Edinburgh's student newsletter. So I'm thinking this is an actual printed publication?

Sounds interesting. Though I'm not sure the IOM counts as 'in particular by English-language poets in exile'. Are you feeling cut off?

A very good idea. I think it's a good magazine, and Sam Smith is a fine poet himself. (And a damn fine picker of poems!)

re a conversation elsewhere, the first time I looked at the Journal I was turned off by the slightly strange guidelines for submission...does "shared set of beliefs" include "shared emotions"? what exactly does religious terminology mean? i'm afraid everyone worships some sort of idol or another, any attempt to be truly secular is doomed to failure unless by it you mean entirely inclusive...does a poem about something that references religion without religion being the subject count? I presume so...

I just found it a messy, silly way of saying things. He seemed to eliminate 95% of all poetry by his criteria. I'm sure it's not the case in practise, of course; but enough people don't want my poems already for me to bother sending to someone who explicitly dismisses them.

Hurrah! I've just had two poems accepted for publication in "Moodswing" published by Talking Pen. It describes itself as a 'pocket broadsheet'.

They picked 'Close' and 'Ebbing'

To be published in two weeks.

You aren't going to be impressed. I only starting writing poetry in March and anyone or anywhere that accepts my poetry is even poetry makes me very happy, so, anyway, one poem called The Friendly Son won a competition in Writer's Forum (£100! not bad!) - a glossy looking thing from WH Smith, July isssue, and 5 poems were accepted by an online magazine called Message in a Bottle, June issue. And At Home on the Lea River won 6th prize in something called Cooldog Publications. I am completely over-excited about it all.

Fiona Sinclair, eh? I see she lives in Kent. Is this someone Sharra knows, I wonder?

Interesting that she lists the premiere division (premiere???) poetry magazines as Poetry Monthly, Aireings, Obsessed with Pipework, Raindog and Snakeskin. That would not be my understanding at all, although I'm not familiar with all of them.

Hmmm. Hmmmm. Hmmmm. I don't know anything about these leagues. I just instinctively knew that something called Message in a Bottle might not take 6 months to read my work before rejecting me. My strategy at the moment is to avoid rejection. I'm going to think about what to do with my £100 now.

£100! I'm still impressed. It's unusual to find any magazine that offers anything more than publication and a year's free subscription, so that's very good. And I wasn't suggesting that it's anything other than a good thing to appear in these online mags. Exposure! There's nothing wrong with that.

You won't have to go very far to avoid rejection, Megan. You write good stuff.

We're impressed. Someone making money!!! and envious. Well done. Though I agree that the list of premiere mags is a bit odd.

I got a hand-written rejection from The Rialto. I was impressed with that.

It's a clothes store in London who have a cinema and a big interest in live poetry and the arts in general.
