I'm thinking about placing a couple of kittiwakes in the foreground, skipping/fluttering away from the ripples.

Mainly phthalo and Prussian blue, titanium white, black and a touch of red to dull some hues a tad.

I'm practicing seascapes for a large painting I'm currently working on. (largest yet at 60 x 50 cms)

Like both JJ. The original expressed the expanse/emptiness. The addition of wildlife helps to punctuate the horizontals. Another option is to lose the defintion of birds in the foreground and let the circling birds in the background prompt a more suggestive narrative. Either way enjoyed both. Did prefer a less cloudy sky, but that is just a personal preference in the context of watery expanse...less is more to use the old mantra.

The painting is bigger than this pic suggests but I know what you mean about the expanse. I wanted to show the reflective qualities of the water at the shoreline and introduce some action to liven it up a bit. The clouds were a result of an accident. I covered up a spill with some clouds then developed them to complement the waves.
