At least yous guys have a semi-noble history. What do we have? A bunch religious nuts come over infect or massacre the Natives. Then buy half of Mexico in a war deal, squat on their land and call them illegal. Nice.
I'm no monarchist, but 37m quid is really sod all compared to how much tax cash is squandered in other areas. In fact it's a bargain. Her maj has to be worth at least that in tourist dollars.
You're right about the anthem Cam. I think we should appropriate the Welsh anthem, Land of my Fathers. Whenever I hear that I feel a great sense of national pride, even though I'm not Welsh. Or maybe because I'm not Welsh, who knows.

How about 'World Turned Upside Down' - The Oysterband refer to the song when they play it as their choice for new national anthem. I'd quite like (with new words relating to UK or England whichever we are talking here) Woody's 'This Land is Your Land'.
Oh yeah and slavery, let's not forget that. Might have started with you, but that was most definitely us. My great grandfathers, etc. Not that I'm proud...Keith - "A bunch of religious nuts come over infect or massacre the Natives" - that was us. Sorry.

Let's face it though, is there a country without a crappy history?
Antarctica sounds better every day.

This land is your land (if you're a wealthy farmer or Prince Charles)
This land is my land (apart from all the bits that are private)
This land was made for you and me (unless the dept for Transport want to put a motorway through it)
Load of idealistic hogwash Woody, old chap. (Good song though.)
Reminded me of:
From Bantry Bay up to Derry Quay and
from Galway to Dublin Town,
no maid I've seen like the brown Colleen
that I met in the County Down.

There are two verses that usually get left out of Woody Guthrie's song -
'In the squares of the city by the shadow of the steeple
Near the relief office I saw my people
And some were stumbling and some were wondering if
This land was made for you and me.
As I went rumbling that dusty highway
I saw a sign that said private property
But on the other side it didn't say nothing
This land was made for you and me.'
