At some point in all of my paintings I've used the artist's palette knife, but this is the first time I've used the knife exclusively. My wife bought me some canvas boards for Christmas, which was very thoughtful of her, but they were a bit coarse, too rough for delicate brush work. So, here is my first palette knife painting for your perusal. I used the small trowel shaped knife all the way through. Trickier than you might imagine.

Thanks for the comments, mac
I was beginning to think this must be seriously lacking.
It's an exercise in light and shade so I'm pleased you mentioned that aspect of the painting.
I quite like the loose effect that knife work forces upon the artist. Detail gives way to impressionism.

dear JJ
i have never used a trowel or any palette knives
i feel you have accomplished very fine hues and contemplative textures
would you be kind enough to share the dimensions of the original
a warm smile

Thank you very much, Lotus, for the analysis and comments. Always appreciated.
The dimensions are rather small and a little bit odd at 31 x 26 cms.
I enjoy using the knife, mainly for the effects it can bring to a painting, but to use it exclusively is something of a challenge.

It pushed you to try something new, and you pulled it off.
You have some great textures there.
The mountains in particular.
I echo that.
I LOVE my palette knife. I use it often. It's my favorite tool.JJWilliamson wrote: ↑Sat Feb 23, 2019 7:53 pmI quite like the loose effect that knife work forces upon the artist. Detail gives way to impressionism.
It's a Bob Ross 2inch
Best thing I have bought.
Get one JJ. You will get so much from it.
Like you say, it loosens you up and liberates you from agonizing over detail.
You certainly have.
Its a great piece JJ.
Well done you.
It certainly is.JJWilliamson wrote: ↑Thu May 30, 2019 11:28 amI enjoy using the knife, mainly for the effects it can bring to a painting, but to use it exclusively is something of a challenge.
But it's worth it if you get the result you were after.

You have some great textures there. ...It was the textured finish that spurred me on. It really does make a difference.
