Congratulations to everyone.

Snakeskin is a mountain I haven't managed to climb yet. I think I'll try again. I've sent them some of my best stuff.
Signature info:
If you don't like the black theme, it is easy to switch to a lighter color. Just ask me how.
If I don't critique your poem, it is probably because I don't understand it.

Many thanks Mac and Celeb. Many congrats to David, Fliss, Ray and John! Excellent poems all round.

If anyone is interested I’ve had a short essay published in Litter Magazine about poetry competitions (https://www.littermagazine.com/2023/11/ ... oetry.html).

Cheers,

Tristan

A convincing viewpoint Tristan, though I confess I've never entered a competition.

Just tiptoeing in to say thanks to MacPhil, Caleb, Tristan for the congrats. And congrats to Tristan in return 🥳

Caleb, I hope you'll try again; the next issue of Snakeskin will be published at the beginning of February.

Tristan, I enjoyed your essay. I've entered a few Ekphrastic Review contests that required entrants to pay for a PDF of images; fortunately it wasn't particularly expensive. When I remember, I enter a small weekly contest recommended to me by Marty, but you don't have to pay.

Hi Phil,

I have to confess that I have entered po comps in the past but not for a long time. Pleased you found it convincing. But as you imply, you’d already come to the pieces conclusions.

Hi Fliss,

Pleased you enjoyed the piece. Po comps are definitely better when there are no entry fees involved.

Thanks both for reading.

Cheers,

Tristan

You're welcome, Tristan. I'm actually considering a competition at the moment, as if I submit only one poem (out of the maximum three), it'll just be £4.00. I'll see how it turns out, though. I might end up submitting for free to a journal and putting the pounds towards a poetry present :D

Well done all! And Tristan, you make a compelling argument. My favorite line was this: "If more poets started to use the money they spent on entering competitions to buy poetry magazines or pamphlets, more poetry would be read, and magazines and small presses might no longer need to run competitions." That is very true!

Pleased you enjoyed it John, and liked that sentence. I can understand why poets enter comps, but for me they are a waste of money when I could be buying a po mag or book. I’ve been reading through the latest edition of Long Poem Magazine and there’s so many interesting things people are doing in poetry at the moment.

Thanks for reading.

Cheers,

Tristan

That sounds like a sensible use of money! I should buy more poetry magazines, help support the industry otherwise than just through contests.

Cheers,
John
