Lugubrious Len has never been my cup of tea, but he does have his moments I have to admit.
Sadly, this isn't one of them IMVHO.
I dunno about third rate, though.
Now THIS is (at least) third rate:

Kayj...spiting your fellow Northerner! I never!
Eh...to each his own.
I still love the line:
"I said to Hank Williams:
'How lonely does it get?'
Hank Williams hasn't answered me yet."
I'm off to cultivate more elevated musical tastes...
Cheers,
K.

I only ever had but one prayer to God, that was: "O, Lord, make my enemies ridiculous." And he granted it.--Voltaire
That is very fine, you're right. I like the Jesus and Mary Chain's version of this song - in fact there have been lots of great covers of Cohen songs, so I suppose they must have something going for them. It's just the originals I find quite monotonous - and there is tons of pretension too.

I'm confused. Are the tons of pretension magically lifted when someone else takes on a Leonard Cohen song?
I'm out of faith and in my cups
I contemplate such bitter stuff.

The pretension comes off with the hat.

The Guy was a poet long before he came the bedsit crooner we know and love today, of course he was pretentious, he couldn't help himself!
I've seen him twice and I can honestly say I saw not one hint of pretentious behaviour, only humilty and a grace that was quite frankly overwhelming. He is an elder statesman who should be bowed down to and celebrated.
I often think (if one is highly talented) as Mr Cohen obviously is, then one can only really sit in a darkened room and do nothing at all. Because when one starts to embrace "culture" head on, as Leonard did, then one can only ever be seen as pretentious...by those who don't "get it"
Hence your comments suprise me KJ.
Each to their own and all that bollocks.
Sincerely
K.Thain

I was hoping you'd chime in Kris!
I knew you liked old Leonard around the same way that I like Dylan: admiration and awe. And just a bit of a gay crush.
Cheers,
Keith
